A question that frequently arises in our thoughts is: What constitutes the Normal mode of operation? Providing Normal treatment implies to “treat in a typical manner.” How is this done?

Treating a “special” child in a “normal” way involves offering them the same respect, empathy, and attention as we would any other child, while recognizing and addressing their distinct requirements.   • Try and explain things/situations;
  • Tell/show acceptable/unacceptable parameters;
  • Providing a solution regarding (If this isn’t the method, or is incorrect, then what is the right/correct approach?);
  • Involve them in daily tasks;
  • Discussing the experiences of the day (ours/theirs);
  • Notice the positive actions they take more frequently and express your gratitude or praise to them;
  • Handle obsessive behaviour by firmly discouraging fixations;
  • Inform prior (where possible) about an event, journey, any change from routine etc;

Example:

  1. Smiling when we say ‘Good morning’ sends the message that you’re happy to see our child. But, if our body language and words don’t match, the child might be confused.
  2. If we ask the child a question but turn away when the child answers, our child might think we’re not interested.

The aforementioned aspects will increase focus on the crucial component of Social-Emotional Learning. This encompasses a broader range of abilities, including self-awareness, self-regulation, social awareness, interpersonal skills, and responsible decision-making, which can vary based on the child’s development.“Treat me normally, but put special efforts” is such a journey in which the child acquires, utilizes, and evolves these skills to effectively manage their daily challenges.
